A fruit market has been engulfed by some mysterious fire – The shops of the market were reportedly burnt beyond recognition – Victims are sid to have lost goods worth millions
The Chairman of Gombe Traders and Artisans Association, Alhaji Suleiman Mai Kusa said the inferno, started at about 2:15 am on Tuesday, March 29. Alhaji Kusa said the wildfire could not be contained in spite of frantic efforts by shop owners, until the arrival of men of the Gombe state fire service.
Chairman of the state fruits Sellers Association Alhaji Aminu Uba said the burnt shops required total rehabilitation. He added that the shops benefitted hundreds of petty traders who stayed and carried out their businesses around them. Uba said the victims lost virtually all their goods worth millions of naira and urged government to urgently come to their aid.
Daily Trust reports that Gombe state governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo who visited the scene of the incident, described the destruction as serious. Dankwambo said he was there on a rapid assessment of the destruction and sympathised with the victims and pledged that efforts would be made by the state government to ameliorate the sufferings of the victims.
